Achill projects receive proceeds from half marathon 2010

Achill Event Management held a presentation evening within the Achill community which saw nine local projects being awarded with funding raised from the proceeds of the 2010 Achill Half Marathon.

Noel Stenson, Chairman of Corrymore Promotions Limited, the company presiding over this successful Achill event, addressed the local groups to thank them for their individual support to their groups, the benefits they bring to a rural community and, more importantly, to Achill.

The assembled parties learned how each group, out of the original 15 projects, went through a grading and selection process and finally made it to the final nine awards. The committee went through several processes before the final amounts and deserving recipients were agreed. “Achill has a strong community spirit and that has been evident from the level of the work done by these winning groups and from the level of local support we see at the Achill Half Marathon,” reported Mr Stenson.

After a final drum roll the following awards were given to (€5,000 ) Keel Community Hall - Lower Achill Community Development Limited; (€5,000 ) Achill Athletics Club; (€2,500 ) Keel Tennis Club/Multi Utility Games Area (MUGA ) - CFAA; (€2,500 ) Cashel Community Park - Grúpa Mná Caisheal; (€1,000 ) Féile Dú Éige – Dú Éige Féile Committee; (€1,000 ) Slievemore Graveyard Committee; (€1,000 ) Bunnacurry Graveyard Committee; (€1,000 ) Achill CPR Training; (€1,000 ) The Achill Historical and Archaeological Society.

The total of awards from the 2010 Achill Half Marathon comes to a staggering €30,000, which in the current climate is amazing for all concerned. Already €5,000 has been contributed to each of the Achill RNLI and the Mayo Roscommon Hospice at an earlier presentation ceremony.

The sixth Achill Half Marathon takes place on Saturday July 2 at 11am, register now at www.achillmarathon.com to avoid disappointment.
