Mayo’s district hospitals full to capacity

The three district hospitals in Mayo are full to capacity and are not under threat of closure, according to the HSE.

At a meeting of the HSE West forum on Tuesday Ballina County Councillor Annie Mai Reape said there were fears for the future of the District Hospital in Ballina after an emergency meeting was called this week.

However, the HSE confirmed on Tuesday that there are no plans to close any of the three district hospitals in Mayo, which are at 100 per cent occupancy and which are located in Swinford, Belmullet and Ballina.

The meeting was called to discuss staffing issues caused by the moratorium on recruitment in the health service and the hospital’s inability to recruit necessary staff.

The meeting was organised to allow staff to discuss and raise issues, Cllr Reape was told.
