Ballina councillors give funding to local groups

Ballina town councillors gave out €9,500 in funding to local groups and individuals this week as part of their contributions to other bodies’ budgets. The funding was given to Belleek Forest Enhancement Group, Friends of the Dolman, the Ballina Senior Citizens Bus Service and to local snooker player Jason Devanney.

Cllr Willie Nolan proposed giving €4,500 to the Belleek Forest Enhancement group. “They have done tremendous work in Belleek forest and turned it into a wonderful attraction for the town,” he said.

Cllr Barry McLoughlin seconded the proposal also lauding the work done by all those involved with the enhancement group. The members also agreed to give €2,050 to the Ballina Senior Citizens bus service, with Cllr Johnny O’Malley telling the meeting that, more than 60 people use this bus services three times a week and this money will help ensure this great service is kept and gives the mobility to people who need it.

Young Ballina snooker player Jason Devanney, who is going to Montreal in Canada in the summer to take part in the world championships, was also given €1,600 to assist in his travels to the world championship. The friends of the Dolman group was also given €1,350.
