Westport Lions Club fund-raising show
The Westport Lions Club is hosting what promises to be the musical event of the year. On Friday May 27 some of Westport’s top musicians are playing in the Castlecourt Hotel from 9.30pm onwards. The tickets are €10 and every penny raised will go to the Westport Lions Club. The venue and all of the bands are being given free of charge. The musical line up is dazzling and includes traditional, folk, rock and classical music.
“We will have two stages hosting 12 different acts,” said event organiser John Scahill. “Each act gets approximately 15 minutes. We hope to have one act quickly followed by the next so as to keep the momentum building. The climax of the event is the re-forming of The Mall River Band. They will play us out at the end with maybe a few others joining in. It should be a great night.” The money raised will help the Westport Lions Club to continue to support and care for the elderly and needy locally as well as some international aid project.Tickets are available from any Lions Club member, The Castlecourt Hotel, Nicola’s Food Emporium, or the Clew Bay Hotel. Official launch event for sculpture in Kilkelly
Echo, Again, the new sculpture by artist Vivienne Roche in Kilkelly adds the finishing touch to the improvements in the town centre and will be officially launched on Thursday May 26 at 3pm.
Tommie Gorman, RTÉ’s Northern editor, previously Europe editor, will attend as guest speaker. A native of Sligo, his first job was as a reporter with the since defunct Ballina-based Western Journal. Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Burke will officially launch the sculpture. All are welcome to attend and refreshments will be provided. Everyone is invited to meet at the sculpture in the Square in the centre of the town at 3pm.
The Pitch takes to the stage in the Linenhall
Moth Productions’ critically acclaimed The Pitch offers a night of top Irish theatre starring Shane Connaughton at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday, June 2 at 8pm. Philly has lived and played for his team, the jersey, the parish, his friends, and the very GAA pitch his enemies are now trying to take from him to turn into a housing estate. Tormented by painful memories and the unjust fate that holds him prisoner, he replays the events of that day when his club won the County Championship for the one and only time, but he was not allowed to play. Accused of fathering an illegitimate child, and now threatened with retirement to a nursing home, he holds tight to the Herculean feats of his youth - and to the land on which these dramas unfolded. Bealtaine variety concert at the Linenhall
Castlebar Active Retired Group stages its popular free variety concert of music, songs, dancing, poems and storytelling at the Linenhall arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday May 25 at 8pm.
The concert, for all ages, is part of Bealtaine, the national festival celebrating creativity in older age. So prepare to be entertained by some of Castlebar’s youngest at heart! (Castlebar Active Retired Group was established in 2000. The members meet once a week, on Wednesdays between 3pm and 4.30pm at the Welcome Inn on New Antrim Street in Castlebar. Newcomers are always welcome. ) Admission is free but booking is advised. A complimentary tea and coffee reception will take place from 7.30pm prior to the concert. The Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this performance possible.
