Men convicted for illegal fishing

Three men from Ballina were convicted and fined at Ballina District Court this week for illegally fishing.

On August 28 2010, fishery officers observed Oisin Kearney, Kincon, Ballina, and Martin Ruddy, Ratheskin, Kilfian, Ballina, use a net in a river in the Rathnadoffy, Killala area. When fishery officers moved in the men ran off, but were eventually apprehended.

The following month fishery officers, who were inspecting the same location, observed Kearney and Patrick Fleming, Tonroe, Kilfian, Ballina, have a net and bag in their hands. Both men dropped the items to the ground when they observed the fishery officers.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined Kearney a total of €300 and directed that a total of €600 be paid towards costs.

Ruddy was convicted and fined €150 and directed to contribute €300 towards costs.

Fleming was convicted and fined €150 and directed to contribute €300 towards costs.
