The Parting Glass at the Linenhall
Hailed by critics as “remarkable”, “excellent” and “exquisite”, Axis Ballymun theatre company presents The Parting Glass, Dermot Bolger’s humorous and poignant play about post-Celtic Tiger Ireland, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday May 11 at 8pm.
Where were you when Ireland’s World Cup dreams were dashed by Thierry Henry in 2009? Eoin was at the heart of the drama in Stade de France on that fateful night. A wonderful piece of storytelling that is both comic and moving, Irish everyman Eoin reflects on mid-life and Ireland’s recent turbulent history with mischievous Dublin wit and sharp home truths. Axis Ballymun continues its immensely successful association with one of Ireland's best-known writers, Dermot Bolger, in a one-man play directed by Mark O'Brien and performed by Ray Yeates.
Old time American music comes to Castlebar
The Foghorn Trio brings its special brand of old time American music to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday May 12 at 8pm.
The Foghorn Trio features three musical luminaries: Stephen ”Sammy” Lind on fiddle, banjo, guitar and vocals, Caleb Klauder on mandolin, guitar, fiddle and vocals, and Nadine Landry on guitar, bass and vocals, who have just released the album Sud de la Louisiane. Together, the trio blend voices, repertoire and instruments to create a diverse performance true to the roots of American music, throwing some Cajun and Caleb's vintage sounding originals in the mix. Expect a night of great music with great heart: Prepare to be enchanted.
Fruitcake kicks off Bealtaine 2011
The first event is part of our Bealtaine 2011 programme. The hilarious Fruitcake starring Mary McEvoy, perhaps better know for her role as Biddy McDermott in Glenroe, starts off as a cookery demonstration but is in fact an account of one woman’s life and how each ingredient reminds her of past memories and decisions made which ultimately changed the course of her life.
Even though some lessons came late she now lives a fruitful, productive, life because of this. Funny and poignant, this play has something for everyone. It takes place on May 11 at 3pm in the new Ballina Arts Centre. This is a free event but booking is essential, contact Ballina Arts Centre on 096 73593.
Sketchfest at the Museum of Country Life
On Sunday May 28 why not drop in to the galleries to draw and sketch objects using the museum’s collection as inspiration. It will have the materials you will need. You can learn new techniques and get expert tuition, at 3pm Deirdre Keetley will give an adult sketch session and at 4pm Lisa Fahy will host a children’s sketch session for five to 12-year-olds.
