Are you really what you eat?

Ultan Molloy, MPSI, HealthWest Community Pharmacy, Ballindine, this week discusses dietary habits.

We have all heard the expression, “you are what you eat”, but how important is our diet really?

Heart disease, blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer are the most prevalent causes of premature death in our Irish population. The incidence of all of these can be reduced in our population by addressing our dietary habits and controlling our weight. Ask yourself, are you eating the best you can so that you are in the best possible health on the inside and outside?

Most medicines only treat symptoms and many do not ‘cure’ what they are treating. Patients on blood pressure medicines, cholesterol medicines, and diabetes medicines all know that sorting out their diet can make a serious difference to their health and their wallet in the medium to long term. It goes without saying in the case of our health, that prevention is better than trying to cure the problem later.

Your pharmacist is always available for advice on diet and lifestyle and you can speak to him/her in private. Ask your pharmacist or dietician today about your diet, nutrients, vitamins, and advice on weight management solutions. You will feel empowered and help get your cholesterol, weight and blood pressure under control. It is an investment in your health.
