It’s that time of year again when Mayo County Council arts office is almost ready to embark on a month long programme of activity for Bealtaine 2011. This is the 16th year of Bealtaine, the national festival which celebrates creativity in older age – co-ordinated nationally by Age and Opportunity. Bealtaine aims to involve older people in the arts, through expression and active participation. It also encourages older people to engage as an experienced audience for all art forms. This year’s extensive programme features the arts office working with a number of Active Retirement Associations throughout Mayo as well as some of the community nursing units throughout the county. The main features of this years programme are Fruitcake - a drama featuring Mary McEvoy, New Ground project at Féile na Tuaithe, The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Blossoms in May – Creative Workshops Day, The Green Bough - a showcase of work by older people from the county, public art talks with composer Ian Wilson, Communal Weaving Project, and Music in Care Settings.
Arts venues throughout the county as well as Mayo County Council library service will also have a variety of events on offer during Bealtaine ranging from talks to workshops to films and much more.
