Old time American music at the Linenhall
The Foghorn Trio brings its special brand of old time American music to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday May 12 at 8pm.
The Foghorn Trio features three musical luminaries: Stephen “Sammy” Lind on fiddle, banjo, guitar and vocals, Caleb Klauder on mandolin, guitar, fiddle and vocals and Nadine Landry on guitar, bass and vocals, who have just released the album Sud de la Louisiane. Together, the trio blend voices, repertoire, and instruments to create a diverse performance true to the roots of American music, throwing some Cajun and Klauder’s vintage sounding originals in the mix. Expect a night of great music with great heart: Prepare to be enchanted.
The Bonfire Band come to Castlebar
The Bonfire Band bring their distinctive and engaging blues/country/folk sound to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Tuesday May 17 at 8pm. The Bonfire Band are building a reputation based on good songs and hard work. Based in London, The Bonfire Band’s easy-going style offers an impressive selection of harmony-driven self-penned songs full of musical and lyrical maturity, as witnessed on two albums, One Man Can’t Carry Half a Piano and Recordings from The Plough. The band boasts an accomplished line-up of musical talent in the shape of Ben Faulkner (guitar ), Will Heath (bass ), Adam Beattie (banjo/lead guitar ), Dominic Brider (drums ), and Will Butterworth (piano ). Hughie O’Donoghue exhibition to launch Arts Centre
Throughout May, June, and July Ballina Arts Centre celebrates its return to Barrett Street with a dizzying programme of events incorporating local, national, and international artists. Its opening exhibition by Hughie O’Donoghue, drawn from public and private collections throughout the country, is inspired by the landscapes of north Mayo and is the first time these paintings have been exhibited together.
Born in Britain to an Irish mother and English father, the contemporary expressionist artist Hughie O’Donoghue grew up in Manchester, although he passed many of his early summers in Bangor Erris, from where his mother had emigrated. He studied at Goldsmiths' College, and since then has been exhibiting his work in a variety of international solo and group exhibitions, gradually evolving a style of art all his own. His painterly skills, together with his research into his subjects, has enabled him to produce a highly acclaimed body of work, several prestigious awards, and a distinguished reputation, not least for his masterful expression of human suffering. He has exhibited widely in the UK and also in the USA, Spain, Italy, Australia, and Germany. The official opening by Cllr Michael Bourke, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council takes place this Thursday, May 5 at 8pm.
Mayo Youth Theatre present Around the World in 80 Days
On Friday, May 6 and Saturday May 7, Mayo Youth Theatre, will present Around the World in 80 Days written by Jules Verne and adapted by Philip Brennan and Stephen Colfer, and directed by Niamh McGrath in the new Ballina Arts Centre.
The English gentleman Mr Phileas Fogg, enters into a wager whereby he will circumnavigate the globe and return to his starting point. The wager is between Fogg and his friends at the Reform Club (an organisation of wealthy men ) and the stakes are high. Between them Fogg and his friends own the lease on an orphanage. The others want to close it down and sell it but Fogg wagers his half of the orphanage in an effort to save it from closure.
Fogg and his friend Passpourtout have many adventures along the way even saving a damsel in distress. All the while Inspector Fix is on their tail as Fix thinks Fogg is responsible for a London bank robbery. France, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, and San Francisco are among the destinations of Fogg's adventures but will they make it around the world in 80 days and save the orphanage?
Established in 1999, Mayo Youth Theatre is based in Ballina. Through the promotion and support of quality youth theatre, emphasising personal and social development, Mayo Youth Theatre provides access to drama to those aged 14-20 yrs. Admission is €7 and booking essential.
