Davitt College student captains gymnastic team at the World Championships

Shannon Garrett, a fifth year student at Davitt College, Castlebar, has just been selected to travel to Florida in April to compete as part of the Irish gymnastics team at the World Championships. She will captain the Irish team at the championships which will take place in Disneyland, Florida, with teams from all over the world including Germany, France, Korea, Russia, and England. This is the first time an Irish team has competed in this championship. The event will be covered on American TV.

Garrett recently competed in Norway as part of the Irish ladies artistic gymnastics team. Later this summer she will compete in Portugal with the Irish trampoline team. Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Shannon Garrett for her great achievements from all students and teachers at Davitt College.

Large participation at Mayo cycling league.

After two rounds of the Mayo Cycling league to date 110 cyclist have taken part, Western Lakes, Castlebar CC, Westport Covey CC and Swinford CC are the driving forces behind the drive to get bums on bikes, and in the league case racing.

Round two was a battle against the watch, with the front group getting a very favourable handicap a group of 14 escaped being caught by the fast finishing scratch group on the Westport to Louisburgh and back course.

U15 national champion Liam Corcoran from Castlebar fought of the efforts of Westport duo Padraig Gannon and Ray Staunton to take the win. The scratch group was led home by the in-form David Brennan of Castlebar.

Michael Gilvarry, winner of round one, still leads the league on 25pts with Ger Corcoran Westport in joint second place with Padraic Gannon, also of Covey Westport CC, on 23pts. The league table will definitely get a shake up after the Castlebar round of the league which took place last night, Thursday April 28.

Mayo u14 camogie team do well in Donegal

On last Monday the Mayo camogie u14 team headed to Aodh Ruadh, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, to participate in An Cumann Camogaiocht School of Excellence Blitz.

All players had participated in skills training for four weeks under coach/tutor Peter Cassidy of Mayo Camogie County Board development office and coach Fiona Hamilton, County Board chairperson. The Mayo camogie team comprised players from the three Camogie clubs Ballyvary, Na Brideoga, and Westport. Mayo Camogie played three matches against county teams from Donegal, Roscommon, and Cavan and scored a hat trick with victories in all matches. The team, mentors, and supporters celebrated in style with a barbecue on Bundoran beach where they basked in sunshine and revelled in their fantastic achievement.
