A call has been made for the provision of a new bus stop in Castlebar.
According to Fine Gael town councillor Noreen Heston there is a need for a bus stop at the entrance to Mayo General Hospital and the GMIT.
Cllr Heston said the town council had plans to carry out enhancement works at Church Street, Mountain View, and the Old Westport Road to include hard and soft landscaping, road surfacing, modified parking arrangements, bicycle parking stands, street furniture, and decorative lighting. Submissions and observations have been invited on the scheme from the public under Part 8 of the Planning Act.
But Cllr Heston feels the work being proposed presents a great opportunity to address the need for a bus stop at the entrance to both the hospital and the college. She said a large proportion of patients and visitors to the hospital and students of the GMIT use public transport and it would make a lot of sense to provide the convenience of a bus stop there.
“The proposed enhancement works in the area gives the council an ideal opportunity to deal with this well established need. I regret that the scheme as published does not include a proposal to provide the bus stop,” said Cllr Heston.
“I suggest that people should avail of the invitation from the council by making submissions on the enhancement works backing my call for the inclusion of the additional bus stop,” she said.
Submissions or observations with regard to the proposed development should be made in writing to Marie Crowley, town clerk, Castlebar Town Council, Marsh House, Newtown, Castlebar, before June 3 2011.
