Calleary steps up to the front bench as spokesperson on justice, equality, and defence

Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary is to join his party’s front bench with his appointment as spokesperson on justice, equality, and defence. According to the Ballina TD he will be a “responsible and constructive voice in opposition”.

“The role of spokesperson on justice, equality, and defence is a challenging one, and I am very much looking forward to that challenge. This is a critical time for the country, and keeping our communities safe must remain a top priority for this Government,” said Dep Calleary.

“In my position on the Fianna Fáil front bench, I will be a proactive member of the Opposition, supporting initiatives that promote justice and equality in this country. In particular I want to ensure that the Fine Gael/Labour Government builds on efforts to crack down on white collar crime, prioritises the Garda campaign targeting the sale and supply of drugs, and shows no tolerance for any level of paramilitary activity,” he added.

According to Dep Calleary great credit is due to the gardaí and members of the defence forces who work tirelessly to make our communities safe, despite circumstances that are often difficult. “In our endeavours to secure Ireland’s sustainable economic recovery, every effort must also be made to support those people who promote peace and justice on our island. I look forward to working with the various organisations in the sector to discuss how we can achieve this goal into the future,” concluded Dep Calleary.

In appointing Deputy Calleary to this important role the Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin has said the Mayo TD will play an important role in providing a robust and constructive opposition in the Dáil.

The Fianna Fáil leader added: “This is an important time for our country and an important moment for the Fianna Fáil party. In choosing the spokespeople I have, my priority has been to place individuals in roles where they will hold the Government to account and play a constructive part in ensuring the government take forward the policies necessary to protect the country’s recovery. Similarly, Fianna Fáil’s priority will be the renewal of our policy agenda – along with everyone on our Dáil team, Dara Calleary will play a leadership role in that process.”
