Five players were let go from the Mayo senior football panel this week, but Mayo manager James Horan was keen to stress that the door is still open for all who were let go. “We let some of the lads go this week, five in total,” he said. “They were Tom Parsons, Aidan Kilcoyne, Mark Ronaldson, Barry Moran, and Brian Benson. We’re aiming to have a solid 30-man panel but it is by no means closed off. There are six rounds of club games before we play London and we’ll be at all those games and we’ll be watching all the guys and they can come back into consideration.” Horan also confirmed that both Donal Vaughan and Trevor Howley, neither of whom has featured yet this year as they work their way back from injury, will continue to be involved with the panel.
While the omission of the likes of Parsons, Kilcoyne, Moran, and Ronaldson will cause some raised eyebrows, Horan has given chance to impress to some 30 players in the national league this year and a large number more before that in the FBD League. The Ballintubber man also admitted that he and his side have a lot of work to do before championship. “It was good to get a look at all the lads and we got to see that we have a number of good players, and we discovered a few new good options especially in the forwards,” he said. “However there are some serious gaps that we have to fill and stop, we’ll be working hard on that and we all know that we have to fill these gaps if we want to go far in the championship.”
