Greenway Park opening today in Westport

The Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, will officially open the Westport Greenway Park today (Friday April 15 ) at 3pm.

This multi use games area (MUGA ) and skateboard park, with a seated viewing area, is situated adjacent to the Greenway on the West Road. The park is one of the most modern of its type and has been sensitively constructed with the highest safety standards to accommodate all sporting enthusiasts and includes access for disabled persons.

The project is a partnership of Westport Town Council, Westport Tidy Towns Committee, and South West Mayo Development Company.

To coincide with the opening a week long programme of activities has been organised in association with Westport Leisure Park and Mayo Sports Partnership. Professional skateboarders will be on site on Friday April 15 and 16. They will teach skating, the importance of safety, respect for other skaters/cyclists, the use of protective helmets and looking after the skate park.

Westport town councillor Myles Staunton said that the town council made it a priority to ensure that this outdoor facility for the youth was provided. Commitment to the local youth by the town council has also been given by the council with “an increase in amenity grants this year and to put additional funding into youth activities”.
