Scenic walking trail being targeted by criminals

Walkers using a popular walking trail just outside Castlebar are returning to their cars to find they have been broken into.

That’s according to Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett who has called for action to stop the thefts.

The scenic walking trail at the Booster Station near Glenisland was the target of more car break ins last weekend. On Sunday walkers returned to their cars to discover cash and other personal items were taken and one vehicle had a window smashed.

“This is not the first time that cars at this popular walking trail have been targeted by thieves. Former Labour councillor Johnny Mee had highlighted the issue a number of years ago and now it seems that the easy target of parked cars in a country setting is proving to be an new opportunity for local thieves,” said Cllr Barrett.

Cllr Barrett has condemned the spate of robberies. “This is a very popular area for locals who want to use the trail for regular exercise. I'm appalled that there seems to be a group of thieves targeting the parked cars for a few lousy euro. This recent incident has been very disturbing for innocent walkers who were just out for an enjoyable walk in the country.

“I intend to raise the matter with local gardaí to see what can be done to put an end to this petty criminality.”
