Klaus Laitenberger will visit Connacht Gold DIY and Garden Centre on April 16 between 2pm and 4pm to discuss organic vegetable production with all those interested in this growing field. Mr Laitenberger has spent many years learning the craft of vegetable growing, experimenting with different plants and techniques, and passing on his knowledge to countless students of all ages. The last 10 years have been spent in Ireland, so he has managed the vagaries of boggy soils, high rainfall, the most common pests and diseases, and has distilled what he has learnt into his discussions and lectures.
He was running a four-acre organic market garden in England before moving to Ireland in 1999 where he was the head gardener at the Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co Leitrim, for seven years. He then took on the challenge to start the garden restoration in Lissadell House in Co Sligo.
For the last few years he has worked as a self-employed trainer, mentor, and consultant in organic horticulture. Last year he completed his PgDip in organic farming (SAC Aberdeen and University of Glasgow ). His first book, Vegetables For the Irish Garden, is now available. The book will be of interest to anybody just starting to grow a few vegetables for the first time as well as for the more advanced gardeners. Klaus Laitenberger will also be signing copies of this sought-after book on the day.
