Local heritage and the living landscape

At a recent event in the Pontoon Bridge Hotel, Councillor Michael Burke, Cathaoirleach, Mayo County Council, made presentations to nine community groups which participated in a local heritage and living landscape course, organised by Mayo County Council and North East Mayo Leader Partnership Company, and supported by the Heritage Council.

During the evening, representatives from the communities of Attymass, Ballina Quay, Carracastle, Cloontia, Crossmolina, Enniscoe, Foxford, Meelick and Swinford showcased heritage projects that are being developed within their communities to an appreciative audience.

The aim of the course, which is an action of the County Mayo Heritage Plan, is to assist community groups to realise the full extent and potential of their local heritage and how best to care for it. “This evening is the culmination of a lot of hard work by all the communities taking part, and I would like to acknowledge their commitment to the course and to their projects,” Deirdre Cunningham, heritage officer, said at the event.

Cllr Burke congratulated all the communities who completed the course. “Your communities should be very proud of your commitment to protecting and enhancing your local heritage, which makes the areas in which you live unique,” he said. The groups will continue to develop and implement their heritage projects over the coming months.
