Kilcoyne staying independent for now

Independent Castlebar town councillor Michael Kilcoyne is staying Independent for now, but he is willing to talk to the Labour party if they come to him. The former Labour party councillor spilt with the party before the last local elections over candidate selection issues. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser this week Cllr Kilcoyne said: “Well as of now, I’m staying independent. If Labour want to talk to me I will talk to them. I have no problem talking to Eamon Gilmore and he knows this.”

Labour party leader Eamon Gilmore was due to be in Castlebar last night to address a public meeting in the TF Royal Hotel on local issues, but Cllr Kilcoyne told the Mayo Advertiser that he wasn’t having any discussions with Mr Gilmore yesterday. “I know that he will be in Castlebar but I won’t be meeting with him as I’m away working in Dublin on that day.”

Cllr Kilcoyne also confirmed that he will be seeking election to the county council next year again, as an Independent for now. “I will be putting my name forward for election. I only missed out on the county council by 56 votes last time so I will be looking for a seat on it again.”
