Conviction for mother whose child was unrestrained

A mother of five, who allowed her three-year-old child to be unrestrained in her car as she drove to get Calpol for her children, was before Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

Jacinta Maloney-Collins, 6 Fearon Terrace, Ballina was observed driving on October 28 2010, with her child standing up in the back of the car. There were two other children in the back seat who were strapped in.

The court heard that the woman’s husband does not drive and that a disqualification would therefore have serious consequences.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the defendant €250 and adjourned a possible disqualification to September 13 to see if in the interim the defendant drives without having her children restrained.
