EDUCATION

Speed Dragon F1 representing St Colman’s College, Claremorris, will be the only Mayo representatives in the national finals of F1 in Schools competition early next month in Griffith College, Dublin.

The junior team, who are second year students in St Colman’s College, Claremorris, competed against teams, many of them their senior, in the first of the regional qualifiers for F1 in Schools which took place on Thursday last in Griffith College, Dublin.

The Formula One Technology Challenge ultimately will determine the best-engineered and fastest F1 in Schools cars in Ireland.

The Claremorris team, which comprises Cormac Hanley (graphic designer ), Conor Macken (design engineer ), Liam Murphy (resource manager and manufacturing engineer ), Daire Hopkins (communications and sponsorship ), and Steven McGowan (team leader ), together with their teacher Gerry Lynch, have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks putting the whole project together, and their efforts have certainly paid off. As well as carrying out their research and design of the car, they have also been busy looking for sponsorship and organising fundraising events to fund the project. The team have also recently launched their website www.speeddragonf1.com which they will be keeping updated on their progress.

“Much done and more to do” is the motto of the team after their success in Dublin. They plan on continuing to work closely together as a team and recognise the importance of teamwork to the success of the project. The boys said the experience of the regional finals will stand to them in the national finals and already they have earmarked areas where they can make improvements.
