A woman who was found dead in her home at Derrycrieve, Islandeady, Castlebar, in the early hours of Wednesday has been named as Noreen Kelly Eadon.
A man in his early twenties, believed to be the son of the deceased, was arrested at 8am on Wednesday at Corha, Islandeady, in connection with the discovery of the woman's body.
The gardaí were called to the house, which is approximately seven kilometres from Castlebar, at 1.40am. They had been alerted to the death of the 46-year-old woman by another occupant of the house.
The house and the area around it were immediately sealed off for examination by technical experts. The State Pathologist’s office was notified of the death and a post mortem examination was carried out by Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Curtis.
The cause of death has been established as stab wounds.
The man remains in custody, he is currently detained at Castlebar Garda Station under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984.
Investigations are continuing.
