On Friday March 25, Daffodil Day volunteers are needed to collect for the Irish Cancer Society.
Speaking in advance of Daffodil Day John McCormack, CEO, Irish Cancer Society said: “Ireland’s cancer rate is one of the highest in the world. Latest data from the National Cancer Registry shows that 29,775 people were diagnosed with cancer in Ireland in 2009, 979 of these people were from Mayo.”
In 2010, the Irish Cancer Society provided the following direct patient care services in Mayo:
Specialist cancer nurses supported 137 calls from Mayo to the National Cancer Helpline (Freephone 1800 200700 ).
Three hundred and ninety nights of care were provided in Mayo at a cost of €136,500 in 2010.
€31,950 worth of financial aid was provided to people in Mayo in 2010.
Travel2Care grants were administered to patients across Ireland, with €8,447 specifically going to patients in Mayo.
In 2010, 3,890 cancer information booklets and factsheets were sent to people in Mayo.
Two Daffodil Centres were funded, one in Galway University Hospital and one in Beaumont Hospital Dublin.
Sixteen oncology liaison nurses were funded in hospitals across the country.
