A man who was given a suspended prison sentence at Castlebar District Court this week has given an undertaking to abstain from alcohol as part of a condition attached to the suspended sentence.
On May 20 2010 at 5.50pm, Martin Walsh, Finney, Claremorris, was stopped at Dooletter, Finney, where he was arrested by Garda John Fleming on the suspicion of drink driving.
A blood sample was subsequently taken which gave a reading of 300mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. Walsh also had no insurance for his car when stopped.
The 45-year-old, who has previous convictions, has struggled with alcoholism in his life. The defendant is now hoping to reside with his brother in Kildare.
Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €1,000 and disqualified him from driving for five years. Walsh was also sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months. One condition of the suspended sentence was that Walsh abstains totally from alcohol. For not having insurance he was convicted and fined €500 and disqualified from one year concurrent.
