Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly hit out at vandals who caused damage to the town park in Killala. Cllr Munnelly was speaking at the monthly meeting of the Ballina Electoral Area committee which was held in the new Ballina Arts Centre.
“There was a large amount of vandalism caused to the town park in Killala, last Sunday night by a number of youngsters,” Cllr Munnelly said. “I’m disgusted by it as are the people of the town, there was thousands of euro spent to put that park in place only to see people come along and do this sort of thing.” Cllr Munnelly, who is from the Killala area, told the meeting that local residents had told him that the disturbance went on for a prolonged period of time and woke up many of them.
Independent councillor Gerry Ginty joined in the criticism of the incident, saying that people had to stand up to the type of people who carry out such acts. “I agree with Cllr Munnelly it’s a disgusting act for someone to carry out,” he said. “There is only one thing that will stop these people, the council and the gardaí can only do so much. But it will only stop when people confront the people who are carrying out this kind of attack on public property like this. You’ll find that when you confront people like this they will back down very quickly most of the time, it’s easy to be a big man when no one is around, but when someone puts it up to them they’ll back away more often than not, like most bullies.”
