€9.5 million for Mayo water schemes

Mayo County Council is to receive €9.47 million from the Government under the Rural Water Programme, according to Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary. The Minister of State has also confirmed that the maximum grant per household under the group water schemes is set to increase by €1,000.

Mayo County Council has been granted €6.8 million for the design, construction and operation of rural water projects and has also secured €1 million to connect water schemes to public mains throughout Mayo. €600,000 is being allocated for the takeover of group water schemes and a further €500,000 for the upgrade of group water schemes. In addition to this, €400,000 has been granted for small public water works and sewerage schemes, along with €150,000 for new water schemes and €20,000 for interim works.

“I am delighted that such significant funding has been made available to improve our water supplies during these difficult economic times,” Deputy Calleary said. “It will help to ensure that Mayo County Council will be able to finish any remaining schemes on their action plan to upgrade the group water schemes with substandard sources. The council will also have the resources to upgrade public water schemes to help improve the quality of our drinking water and prevent pollution.

“It is vital that people in rural areas of Mayo will have access to high quality drinking water and improved waste water facilities. This major investment in our water schemes will help us improve the water supplies throughout the county.”
