Air transport is to become safer with the introduction of a new satellite navigation system being launched in Europe this week, according to Jim Higgins MEP.
The EGNOS Safety-of-Life Service aviation system enables precision landing approaches thus making air navigation safer as well as reducing delays, diversions, and cancellations of flights.
As a member of the European Parliament's Transport Committee, the North West MEP has called for increased safety across all modes of travel, including air transport. Mr Higgins believes EGNOS, or European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, highlights how focused research and development can produce solutions for safer, more reliable, transport networks and ultimately benefit the consumer.
EGNOS is made up of transponders aboard three geostationary satellites and an interconnected ground network of 40 positioning stations and four control centres. Its coverage area includes most European states with future extensions in mind. Its launch by the European Commission represents Europe's first venture into the field of satellite navigation.
