“Coffee drinkers throughout Mayo can make a real difference for communities in developing nations if they choose coffees and teas that are Fairtrade certified,” said Patrick Bewley as he launched Bewley’s 2011 Fairtrade Fortnight activities which run until March 13 and include a fairtrade partnership with local convenience retailer Mace.
A coffee industry leader, Mr Bewley pioneered the introduction of Fairtrade certified coffees to Ireland for the first time in 1996 and today Bewley’s is by far the largest provider of fairtrade coffees and teas all over Ireland. The theme of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight is for people to ‘Show off Your Fairtrade Label’ by supporting cafés and retailers which sell Fairtrade products.
“Mayo provides a positive example to many other counties throughout Ireland where Castlebar and Westport have achieved designated Fairtrade status,” Patrick Bewley commented. “This is an excellent commitment and it speaks volumes for the generosity of spirit and community values of people throughout the county.”
