Ballina Town Council this week agreed to give €5,000 of funding towards the work carried out by the North West SPCA.
The funding was proposed by independent Cllr Gerry Ginty. “This is an organisation that does a huge amount of work on a completely voluntary basis,” Cllr Ginty told the meeting. “It takes a huge amount of time and money to nurse these animals back to health, some of them which come in, in the most terrible state of health. The people who go in and rescue these animals are often risking life and limb to do it, and I’d like to thank the gardaí for their support which is often required to rescue the animals. This money is very badly needed right now to ensure that the service can continue to keep working in the area. I’d also appeal to anyone who sees anything to report it to the NWSPCA or the gardaí, because the abuse that some animals suffers is unbelievable.”
Cllr Willie Nolan supporting the funding applauded the work done by those in the organisation. “I’d like to endorse all that Cllr Ginty has said and recognise the work that is done by the volunteers who work in the organisation,” he said. The support for the funding was backed by all of the members who were present at the meeting.
