Mayo people at home and abroad will be able to see the 2011 election results from the Castlebar count centre as they are broadcast live to a worldwide audience on Mayo TV tomorrow. Broadcasting live over the internet, Mayotv.ie will feature regular count updates as the ballot boxes are opened, analysis and discussion on the early tally counts, interviews with the election candidates, and reaction from the parties as the outcome of the 2011 election unfolds in Mayo.
The brainchild of Westport journalist and broadcaster Piaras Ó Raghallaigh, Mayo TV was launched live on Monday night (February 21 ) with a star studded line up of Mayo celebrity guests.
“We’re thrilled to have our very own TV channel in Mayo. This is something new and innovative for the county and we hope that people log on and support us. We have spent the last two years developing the concept and thankfully it is full steam ahead now for our next live broadcast from the election count centre on Saturday next,” commented Ó Raghallaigh.
Mayo TV is all about connecting Mayo people at home and abroad and bolstering Mayo businesses everywhere. “It is an exciting time for Mayo people everywhere especially with the prospect of the county electing the leader of the country, and Mayo TV will be at the heart of the action,” commented Ó Raghallaigh at the launch of Mayo TV this week.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny described the launch of Mayo TV as “a ground-breaking development in modern technology for Mayo”. “I want to wish Mayo TV all the best for the future, it is fantastic to see Mayo people developing new employment opportunities using state-of-the-art digital technology,” he said.
Targeting a worldwide audience, Mayo TV will feature weekly news and sports updates as well as features on entertainment, Mayo businesses, farming matters in Mayo, and community events from across the county.
“We will be covering everything from football to farming and from fishing to fashion on Mayo TV. We want to showcase Mayo to the world as a wonderful place to live in, to do business in, and to visit as a holiday destination. Mayo TV will give a voice and TV presence to every aspect of life in Mayo,” Ó Raghallaigh said.
“We have already five people employed full time with Mayo TV and we hope to have 20 full time staff before the end of the year,” commented the Mayotv.ie founder. “We have already recruited some of the west’s best TV producers, directors, and editors and we will be adding new presenters, researchers, and reporters in the coming weeks,” he said.
Mayo senior football team manager James Horan, international boxing star Ray Moylette, Mayo county manager Peter Hynes, Mayo person of the year Pat Jennings, and former Mayo Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy were just some of the people interviewed on Mayo TV at its launch on Monday night.
