Two of Mayo’s five Independent candidates in today’s General Election have come together in issuing a joint statement to the electorate highlighting the need for an Independent candidate to be elected in Mayo.
Ballina based Martin Daly and Castlebar based Michael Kilcoyne have said the prospect of four Fine Gael seats with a Fianna Fáil TD, in their opinion, “does not bode well for democracy and openness”.
“The people of Mayo deserve to have an independent voice in Dáil Éireann to ensure that all the concerns of the people are addressed and that no one party has free rein,” their statement read.
In a clear strike against sitting Minister Dara Calleary the candidates continued: “Even worse for the people of Mayo would be the return to Dáil Éireann of a member of the failed, outgoing, Government that has caused such hardship for the people.
“We would both urge all of our supporters and the supporters of other Independent candidates to please consider the signatories to this statement for your highest possible vote on Friday.
“Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our respective supporters and to wish every candidate luck in the election.”
