Judge Mary Devins adjourned her decision against a Claremorris man who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs for sale and supply this week. Julius Silkaitis, 18 Claremount Manor, Knock Road, Claremorris, pleaded guilty to the charges in court and told the court that he was selling the drugs to make some money so it would be easier on his mother, who was supporting herself and him on social welfare at the time. Garda Ciaran McGrath told the court that he carried out a search on Silkaitis’ home on December 9 2009 at 18 Claremont, Claremorris. He found 18.65gms of cannabis herb divided into 22 bags in the defendant’s room with a value of €400.
Silkaitis also pleaded guilty in court to a charge of driving without insurance and a driving licence. He was stopped by Garda McGrath on June 18 2009 at Mount Street, Claremorris, at 5.20pm who demanded the production of Silkaitis’s driving licence and insurance within 10 days, which Silkaitis failed to do.
The court was told by solicitor for Silkaitis, Fiona McAllister that her client had completely turned his life around since then. She told the court that he had got himself on the straight and narrow and was currently undertaking a PLC course in Galway where he was studying information technology and that he had applied through the CAO for a number of third level courses in Galway for next year.
For the driving with no insurance, Judge Devins convicted and fined him €700 and disqualified him from driving for five years and took other driving charges into consideration. For the drug charges Judge Devins adjourned her decision until July 19 2011 when she will make her decision.
