Three month suspended sentence for woman who changed price tags

A Castlebar woman who was arrested after she changed the price tags on an item of underwear in Tesco, Claremorris, was given a three month suspended sentence in Claremorris District Court this week.

The court was told that Winifred Reilly, 14 Castlegrove, Castlebar, was refused entry into the Tesco store in Claremorris at 9.30pm having been previously barred from the premises. She refused to leave and barged her way in with her husband and went down to the clothing section of the store where she replaced the price tag on a dearer item of underwear with a cheaper price tag. She then went up to the self service check out and put it through the till. When she was challenged by staff she became abusive and the gardaí were called.

The court was told that she had a number of previous convictions for theft, public order, and driving offences. Judge Mary Devins convicted her of threatening and abusive behaviour and sentenced her to three months in prison, suspended for 12, and she took the theft charge into consideration.
