Woman stole twenty two items of clothing

A woman who stole 22 items, which she concealed in a child’s buggy, was sentenced to prison this week.

At Castlebar District Court on Wednesday, Garda JP Dunning gave evidence that he was called to New Look, Castlebar, on May 8 2010 at 6.15pm, where he was informed about the theft of €370 worth of items and told that the suspects were heading towards a nearby car park. Garda Dunning located the three women — Margaret Sweeney, 7 Bog Road, Ballinrobe, was one of them. Three bags containing the items were found in a buggy. Sweeney admitted she stole the clothes and all items were returned to the shop.

The separated mother of two has two previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined her €300 and sentenced her to 28 days in prison.
