Ballinrobe Musical Society presents Come the Dawn

Starting tomorrow night, the multi award winning Ballinrobe Musical Society presents the revised world premier of Come the Dawn. This new production has been written and composed by society member Peter Kennedy.

Come the Dawn is not an historic document, nor a true story, despite being firmly rooted in the reality of the Ulster 'Troubles' of the pre-Good Friday Agreement era. It is, rather, an artistic representation of the fears and nightmares that haunted the generations who grew up amid the turmoil. It recognises that both good and evil exist on both sides of the equation, and acknowledges that each group's aspirations are passionate, and valid, depending upon which side of the fence one is standing. The show will run from Saturday February 19 to Saturday February 26 in Ballinrobe Community School. Tickets are available from Sean Costello, Abbey Street, Ballinrobe, and by phone on 094 9541405, between 9.30am and 6pm.

Off Season: Niall Kerrigan exhibition at Ballina Arts Centre

Throughout the month of February, Ballina Arts Centre is hosting Off Season, an exhibition of work by Killala-based artist Niall Kerrigan. Reminiscent of the famine villages, the concept of Off Season comes from the months when the holiday homes and villages are unoccupied, waiting for life to be breathed into them again. Shops in small seaside towns waiting for the tourist business to come back; colourful playgrounds and amusements sitting empty. These locations portray a loneliness and emptiness of place without people.

Off Season takes as its subject a more contemporary version of this loneliness; one created by a more affluent society. Despite this, there is loneliness in these villages and towns during the off-season of the title. The exhibition runs until March 5 and admission is free. For more information contact the Arts Centre on 096 73593, or log on to www.ballinaartscentre.com
