No hair straighteners in Mountjoy, court told

A woman in her 30s dragged another woman to the ground in Supermac’s due to an ongoing family feud.

Ballina District Court heard on Tuesday, that on August 14 2010, at 1.50pm Mary Collins, Foxford Road, Ballina assaulted Bridget Maughan as she sat eating a meal in Supermac’s Ballina.

Collins pushed a buggy, which had Ms Maughan’s child in it, across the restaurant before she pulled Ms Maughan by the hair to the ground. Ms Maughan was pregnant at the time.

Supermacs’ management intervened and the incident was captured on CCTV.

Collins, who is her early 30s, has no previous convictions. The court heard that the incident stemmed out of a proposal of marriage which didn’t take place between the two families.

Judge Mary Devins asked Collins if this was worth going to Mountjoy for as “they don’t even have hair straighteners there”—a fact that the judge was informed of by another defendant at a recent court.

Collins gave an undertaking to the court that she would not have contact with Ms Maughan.

Judge Devins adjourned the case for sentencing to December 13.
