A man who collided with a woman as she crossed the road in Ballinrobe, was convicted of careless driving at Castlebar District Court this week.
Marek Rudzki, Apartment 1, Weaver Road, Ballinrobe struck Ann O’Hara on May 6 2010 at 5.30pm on New Street, Ballinrobe.
Ms O’Hara said that as could see that a lorry was holding up traffic as it tried to manoeuvre around the corner, that she decided to cross the road at that point. However, the car driven by Rudzki shot out in front of the lorry, even though the car did not have right of way, and knocked Ms O’Hara. She was assisted from the road and suffered a broken knee from the accident.
Garda Aidan Connaughton who attended the scene said that the defendant told him that he hit the woman.
The defendant’s statement said that that as slowly he pulled out in front of the lorry the woman stepped out in front of the car, but she did not see him as she was looking at the lorry.
Judge Mary Devins said that the defendant “saw the lorry coming slowly around the corner and in spite of the stop sign you took the corner quickly and hit the pedestrian.”
The Polish defendant, who has no previous convictions is employed. He was convicted and fined €200.
