Funding totalling almost €20 million has been allocated to Mayo County Council under the 2011 regional and local roads scheme. The grant will supplement expenditure by the local authority from their own resources.
Fianna Fáil frontbench spokesperson on Enterprise, Employment and Innovation Dara Calleary TD has welcomed the €19.8 million allocation for Mayo, just a slight increase on last year’s allocation of €19.7 million.
“The priority is to protect investment and target resources for urgently required repairs due to severe weather and Minister Carey has simplified the grants structure and given more flexibility to local authorities to direct funding to priority cases,” said Minister Calleary.
“These grants, which supplement expenditure by local authorities from their own resources, represent a very significant investment at a time when public finances are under severe pressure.
“I am particularly satisfied with the decision to reintroduce the Restoration Improvement Programme to refocus priority investment under this programme to areas that most need it. Local authorities will also be provided with flexibility to change their programmes if necessary given the recent period of severe weather,” he said.
