What you eat first, how you eat, and how fast you eat can all reveal very interesting information about your ability to lose weight and keep it off. The latest clinical research has shown that people who eat their favourite food first are more likely to be slim than people who leave their favourite food until last.
The reason is simple. If you eat your favourite food first you are more likely stop eating as soon as you begin to feel full. Plus you will feel more satisfied quicker and fuller faster.
But most people who battle with their weight leave their favourite foods until last. There are many reasons for this and they will be very familiar to many of us who battle with our weight. Many of them stem from childhood habits and table manners we grew up with. For example:
Childhood programming — were you told to eat your potatoes and bulk foods before eating your meat and other tasty parts of your meals?
Conscientious eating — were you told to think of all the starving children in Africa and how wrong it is to waste food?
Reward eating — were you rewarded for clearing your plate? Were you given second helpings for being a good eater?
Affectionate eating — were you given your favourite food as a token of your parents’ affection for you? Did those foods then become favourites and comfort foods for you?
Goal eating — did you learn to leave your favourite food on your plate until last so you had something to work towards as you munched through food you did not like?
These are just some of the ways that early programming can sabotage dieters’ success without even knowing it. These deeply ingrained habits form part of our core beliefs but they can be broken and replaced with a more balanced and healthy approach to food.
