Mayo Councillor Michelle Mulherin and Fine Gael General Election candidate, says the upgrading of the N26 should have been included in the 2011 national roads allocation to Mayo.
“Almost €19 million has been allocated by the National Roads Authority (NRA ) to Mayo County Council, but there is no funding to upgrade the N26 which is vital to commerce and commuters,” said Cllr Mulherin.
And she has challenged Fianna Fáil Minister Dara Calleary to state where the promised funding is for Mayo County Council to redesign the road.
“Is the Fianna Fáil view now that the road is not necessary? Is that the upshot of Fianna Fáil renegotiating the programme for government with the Greens in 2009?” asked Cllr Mulherin today.
“The N26 promised to us was sacrificed up and €5m wasted in the process. Instead of getting a straight answer we have been given the run around again to fudge the blatant fact the promise by Fianna Fáil that the road would be commenced in 2008 was broken.”
Cllr Mulherin said the upgrading of the N26 was a priority and could not be put on the back-burner.
