A delegation from Westport Town Council is to go to the offices of the NRA in order to meet representatives, as they “won’t come to us”.
At a previous meeting of the town council it was proposed that representatives from the NRA attend a Westport meeting in order to discuss issues with local NRA roads. However correspondence was received from the NRA, which said that they would not attend.
Councillor Brendan Mulroy said this was “ridiculous” and “if they won’t come to us, we should go to them” and if they “don’t want to meet us we will stand outside their door”.
This proposal was seconded by Cllr Martin Keane.
Town manager Joe Beirne said the NRA primarily deals with Mayo County Council. For the coming year the manager said he was hopeful that money would be secured to bring the N5 Castlebar to Westport road to planning stage. Mr Beirne said that there will also be work carried out on the N59 Mulranny to Newport road and any other money secured for roads in the area would be directed towards repairs, such as repairs on the Sheeaun Road.
Another proposal to extend an invitation for a representative from the Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government was put forward by Cllr Myles Staunton, who previously extended such an invitation in order to discuss the local government reform proposals. However at last week’s meeting Cllr Staunton said that the response from the Department was “disappointing and also discourteous” as the correspondence simply just stated it “noted our motion”.
The Fine Gael councillor said that this was not acceptable and he said that another letter should be sent to say that the invitation still stands.
This was seconded by Cllr Christy Hyland.
