Call for third level students to turn trash to cash

Rethink, remake, recycle, has announced details of this year’s Trash to Cash competition aimed at third level students to design a product or service using recyclables as the raw material. A Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government initiative, the rx3 Trash to Cash organisers want to hear from students from around the country and across all disciplines currently attending universities, institutes of technology, and any other third level course providers in the Republic of Ireland. There is an overall prize-fund of €3k that will be allocated to first, second, and third place winners.

“The recyclables that we put into the green and brown bins are highly valuable resources that we could be turning into new products and jobs here in Ireland instead of exporting nearly 80 per cent as we currently are,” said Grace Binchy from rx3. “We want third level students to come up with bright ideas for turning paper, plastics, glass, rubber, wood, metals, clothing, food and garden waste into quality new products, services, or processes that would have a commercial value here and for the export market. Last year’s winners have benefited greatly from their involvement in the competition with the exposure and the extra credibility that their products gained.”

Anyone wishing to enter can contact rx3 with any queries about the competition from now until February 21 2011 by visiting www.rx3.ie or LoCall 1890 732925. Entries must be submitted by the closing date of March 7 2011.
