Public art programme to focus on Lough Lannagh

Mayo County Council received an overwhelming response to the call for submissions for the public art programme Landmark in Castlebar. Seven artists have been selected for a range of artwork commissions which all focus on the Lough Lannagh area of Castlebar.

The funding for this project has been provided by the Percent for Art Scheme, Dept of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and Housing Capital Programme. This is linked to capital schemes such as the Castlebar sewerage scheme and is additional funding for the area, specifically for public art activities.

Mayo County Council provided a range of opportunities for a number of artists from all public artform disciplines, including music, dance, drama, literature, film, visual and performing arts, within the programme, which comprised four separate strands.

The programme aims to culminate in autumn with a number of high quality contemporary artworks and events which are specific to and have relevance to the town, its people, history, and built and natural environment.
