Two men who were involved in a street brawl, where gardaí had to deal with a “dangerous and volatile situation”, which resulted in the traffic of Ballina coming to a standstill, were before the local district court on Tuesday.
Inspector Joe Doherty outlined that on May 3 2010, Gary Howley, 146 Greenhills Estate, Ballina, and Gary Moyles, 48 St Patrick’s Estate, Ballina, were involved in a serious row on Emmet Street, where a large crowd gathered to watch the fight; as a result traffic was blocked. Both men were covered in blood and gardaí directed that both men desist, which they did not do. Gardaí then tried to separate the two men. An ambulance was then called for Howley.
Inspector Joe Doherty said that the incident led to the town being blocked off and gardaí had to deal with “a dangerous and volatile situation”.
Howley was also in court for being threatening and abusive towards members of the public on July 23 2010 at 3.10am on Howley Street.
The 27-year-old father of three, who has previous convictions, was convicted and sentenced to three months in prison suspended for two years. Judge Aeneas McCarthy also convicted and sentenced him to three months consecutive, suspended for two years, for the July incident.
Judge McCarthy convicted and sentenced 25-year-old Moyles to three months in prison suspended for two years.
