Cost cutting across the board at Mayo County Council could see a number of rural offices being closed, it was revealed this week.
“There is no guarantee that we can retain a decentralised delivery of services,” was the stark warning from county manager Peter Hynes at the budget meeting of Mayo County Council this week.
The issue of consolidation of public libraries into existing area offices had been raised by Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn earlier in the meeting. Mr Hynes, in response to the question, told the meeting, “Consolidation and redeployment are things that we are working our way through. We hope to see more flexible work practices through the council. When we complete a full investigation of all this during the year we will see where we are. It may lead to some of the peripheral area offices being withdrawn. We may not wish to see it happen but it is on the table.”
Mr Hynes also told the meeting that the position of the council’s machinery yard in Castlebar, where the winter maintenance programme was run from, is also not safe as cost cutting is being looked at in all areas.
