Mayo AC featured very strongly in the annual Fields of Athenry 10km. The race originally posted for St Stephen’s Day had to be postponed to Bank Holiday Monday January 3. Gerry Ryan (Craughwell AC ) won the men’s event while Mayo AC top woman Catherine Conway finished in a magnificent 35:53 and a PB. TJ Mc Hugh was first man home for Mayo AC in fourth place overall in a time of 33:22
Other fine finishes included Anto Devanney finishing in 36:32, Colette Tuohy in 38:35, David Huane in 39:19, Brendan Hession who started running in 2010 through the Fit4Life group in Claremorris finished in 42:27, Derval Devanney finished in 43:41, Michael Mc Grath in 45:19 and was in second place position in the 50+ category, Christy O’Malley in 47:06, John Timothy in 49:40, Una Mc Grath in 54:31, and Kevin Timothy in 55:19. The Mayo women’s team took first prize in the team event; the team was made up of Catherine Conway, Colette Tuohy, Derval Devanney, and Una Mc Grath.
Ballina Athletic Club
Ballina Athletic Club registration night for 2011 takes place in the Courthouse Hotel, Ballina, on Monday January 18. Juvenile registrations from 7pm to 8.30pm. Adults/Fit4Life registrations from 8.30pm to 10pm. Individual membership will cost €50, two family members cost €65. Family membership of three or more will be €80. It is imperative that all athletes register on the night as they are not covered for insurance until they are registered with Athletic Ireland. Ballina Athletic Club is collecting old mobile phones to raise funds for the Mayo Athletics County Board. If you have any old mobile phones you can hand them to any committee member as soon as possible.
