Crossing the Shannon, some top trad at the Linenhall
The traditional music of the west of Ireland is celebrated in style with Crossing the Shannon, a Music Network tour that visits the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday, January 19 at 8pm.
Top Irish musicians Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (voice, flute ) and John Wynne (flute ) join forces with musical ambassadors for Connachy John McEvoy (fiddle ) and John Blake (guitar, flute, bouzouki ) to explore the wild dance music, slow airs, and haunting songs of the west of Ireland. Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh is best known for her work with top Irish group Danú, John Wynne is regarded as one of the best traditional flute players of his generation and a regular collaborator with fiddler John McEvoy, while multi-instrumentalist John Blake is a highly sought after musician in his own right with name checks on many top albums. A great night of music is in prospect.
Ireland’s three tenors at the Linenhall
They hardly need any introduction: Ireland’s very own and hugely successful three tenors make a welcome return visit to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday, February 10 at 8pm. The trio of John Scott, David Martin, and Declan Kelly, with their amazing voices and friendly approach, bring a very warm atmosphere to their concert, singing a wide selection of popular songs and creating their very special rapport with their audience over the course of a hugely entertaining evening of wonderful music. Spring season at the Linenhall Film Club
There is world cinema aplenty on offer as Linenhall Film Club springs into life with a season of great movies from all over the globe every second Tuesday from Tuesday, January 18 at 8pm. Kicking off the season is the engaging Japanese movie Fish Story. A badly translated Japanese novel; a song by an obscure proto-punk band; a young girl who meets a would-be super-hero in action-packed circumstances; a chance meeting at a bar; a giant meteorite heading towards earth… director Yoshihiro Nakamura draws together these seemingly disparate and unconnected stories that straddle time and genre in this hugely imaginative and quirky movie based on a novel by Kotaro Isaka. Fresh and inventive, the joy of this film is as much in the telling as the conclusion (don’t worry, we won’t spoil it for you ). A unique film experience.
