Learn some St Brigid’s customs at the Museum of Country Life this month. A workshop on the customs associated with St Brigid is one of several events to look forward to at the museum this month.
Find out what life was like 100 years ago and how to protect your family for the year ahead. It costs only €2 per adult and is free for 16 years and under. First come, first served. Group tours at other times can be pre-booked through the booking office. The event will run until Sunday January 29.
Drop-in knitting circle
Forget the image of granny knitting in the rocking chair. Knitting is for everyone! Make fashionable clothes, hats, and bags in your own style. It is fun to chat and learn a skill for life. Starter kits for children are available. This event will take place today January 7 from 11am to 1pm.
Drop in music circle
Clear away the ‘Foggy Dew’ and play that forgotten tune. Take the opportunity to get together with other learners to share and practise tunes and songs. The music circle will take place on Saturday January 8 from 3pm to 5pm.
The mummers’ play
On Sunday January 9 why not watch the Sligo ‘Sidhe Gaoithe’ mummers bring to life such characters as St Patrick, Brian Boru, and many more in this traditional mummers’ play. Lots of Music, song, laughter and audience participation. The play will kick off from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.
Irish seed savers
On Thursday January 20, join Chrys Gardener for an introduction to Irish Seed Savers and its work in preserving and using heritage vegetables, fruit and grains. From 12 noon to 1pm, it is a community seed swop. Bring your seeds to share and swop with other gardeners. At 1pm there is a seed showing demonstration, while at 2pm there will be slide show presentation, outlining the history of the Irish Seed Savers followed by question and answer session on gardening
The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, on Saturdays from 10am to 5pm, and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays.
