Westport Greenway nominated for LAMA Award

Westport Town Council has announced that the Westport Greenway project has been shortlisted for the 2011 LAMA Awards.

The LAMA (Local Authority Members Association ) Awards, which were created in 2006, recognise excellence in construction at local, county, and national level. LAMA represents elected councillors nationwide and the awards are highly regarded. The annual awards ceremony commends individuals, initiatives, private companies, and people for their outstanding contributions and projects of benefit to the community.

In late 2009 Westport Town Council undertook the conversion and upgrading of the 2.5km railway line into a high standard Greenway facility. The Greenway has proved to be a popular social, recreational, and health giving amenity for both residents and visitors to the town of Westport. It has been extraordinarily successful in promoting walking and cycling in the town and its environs.

Welcoming the announcement, cathaoirleach Tereasa McGuire said that she is delighted that the Greenway Project, which has proven so very popular, has been recognised by the judges as a project worthy of nomination for these prestigious awards.

The project is one of the finalists in the Best Recreational Facility category in the annual awards. The winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony in Dublin on January 22.
