A man was sentenced to two months in prison for collecting for a charity without authorisation.
Castlebar District Court heard that on February 20 2010 David Sweeney, 31 Millbrook, Milltown, Galway, was detected outside a business at Lakeside Retail Park, Claremorris, where he was collecting for a meningitis research charity. However Sweeney had no authorisation to collect for charity. €5 was seized from him.
This case was heard at a previous court sitting where Judge Seamus Hughes directed that a community service assessment report be prepared and if suitable Sweeney would complete 150 hours in lieu of going to prison, however, Wednesday’s court heard that the defendant had not co-operated with the probation service and he was not present in court.
Judge Mary Devins therefore sentenced him to jail.
