The Mulranny to Newport road has been selected as one road to take part in a pilot scheme funded by the NRA as part of the low volume secondary road schemes.
The Westport Electoral Area meeting was informed that these plans will go on public display until February 4. Landowners in the area have been contacted, and so far 90 per cent of the 24 landowners have co-operated in selling their land to accommodate the project.
As part of the scheme, some junctions will be realigned and two access roads will be extinguished.
As for the Greenway project from Westport to Newport and from Mulranny to Achill, this is on target, and expected to be completed by April next year.
Senior executive officer Martin Keating said that the council in association with tourism boards is trying to put together a promotional package to encourage tourism to the Greenway.
Mr Keating said that a “significant event” such as a marathon type event will hopefully take place on the Greenway next summer.
